About Inverness
Inverness – meaning “Mouth of the River Ness” in Gaelic – is a vibrant city in the Scottish Highlands. Regarded as the capital of the Highlands, Inverness boasts a rich history and a buzzing cultural scene. Located just on the doorstep of the hiking trails of the Highlands, Inverness makes a lovely city to visit for exploring nature, as well as enjoying the city life and Scottish hospitality.
We have a range of cosy hostels available in Inverness. What should you expect from your Inverness hostel? Beautiful views over the Highlands, good hostel vibes, friendly staff, cosy common areas and communal kitchens. Stay in a dorm and make friends with other backpackers or enjoy your own peace and quiet in a private room – Inverness hostels have both options to offer. Most of the properties have free Wi-Fi, free parking and city maps available. A homely hostel makes a perfect base for exploring the Highlands!
Most Inverness hostels are in the city centre along the River Ness. The attractions and transport links are close. From the city centre you can find historical sights, shops and restaurants. There is so much to explore outside the city too: the Bronze Age cemetery Clava Cairns, the ruins of Urquhart Castle and the popular dolphin-watching spot Chanonry Point. And not to forget the mysterious Loch Ness – drive or hop on a bus to unveil the secrets of the legendary loch with a mythological monster.
Pop to Victorian Market for some culinary delights or go shopping in Eastgate Shopping Centre. Eden Court is the largest entertainment venue in the Highlands, offering drama, dance, music and more on the banks of the River Ness. Maybe there’s something going on when you visit! Wander around the streets and have a look at Inverness Castle and St Andrews Cathedral. And a trip to Inverness wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Loch Ness – make sure to add that into your itinerary!
The city centre is compact and can be easily explored by foot. Alternatively, you can rent a bicycle. To explore the natural wonders of the Highlands, drive or use the local buses. You can easily get to Inverness by train from all of Scotland’s major hubs; it’ll take 3-4 hours from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Inverness airport connects to other UK destinations, and is just a 15 minute drive or 30 minute coach shuttle from the city centre.
