About Fort William
Located on the Scottish Highlands, the town of Fort William is the firm favourite of backpackers and active travellers who wish to explore the rough beauty of the mountainous landscapes. The town is close to the UK’s highest peak Ben Nevis and surrounded by scenic landscapes that invite the visitors for adventurous hikes, peaceful country walks and other outdoor activities.
Fort William has plenty of hostels to choose from. Stay in an old railway station or in a converted barn. A must-do activity for Harry Potter fans and train enthusiasts, is the Jacobite Steam Train trip from Fort William to Mallaig. Described as one of the greatest train journeys in the world, the round trip takes you through the extremes – from the shadow of the highest peak of the country to the deepest sea water loch in Europe, and over the famous Glenfinnan viaduct.
Arrive by train or car to Fort William. The so-called Caledonian Sleeper, a night train from London to Scotland terminates in Fort William. The nearest airports are Glasgow and Edinburgh. The town centre of Fort William is compact and can be explored by foot. For nature excursions hire a car or use the local bus services. Bike rentals are also available in Fort William.
